UGANDA - Fact file

MAP  II  PARKS  II  ITINERARIES

Uganda is named after the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala.

One of the oldest civilisations, fossils of our earliest ancestors have been discovered in Uganda dating back 20 million years. Uganda suffered economically during the Amin years (1971-1979) but, bears no scars today and it is one of the fastest developing countries in Africa.

Here, savannah meets forest which reason, it has a very proportion of different species relative to its size. It has over a 1000 species of birds and, over 20 species of primates - including the Great Apes - gorilla and chimpanzee.

Uganda's biggest wildlife attraction is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO site, which is over 25,000 years old and contains 300 species of plants, many of them endemic, apart from primates, forest animals and 350 species of birds. A gorilla trek in Bwindi is one of the highlights of any wildlife safari. Just as Bwindi is for gorilla tracking, Kibale NP is for chimpanzee trekking.

Given its size, one can cover many of Uganda's top wildlife destinations by road - Lake Mburo, Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kibale, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley, Pian Upe - over a ten day safari.

Apart from the Great Ape treks and wildlife game drives, we offer birding tours including shoebill tours in Mabamba Swamp, boat trips, white water rafting, kayaking, boda boda tour, source of the Nile tour, guided nature walks, hiking and trekking.

An interaction with the Batwa Pygmies is highly recommended at Bwindi.
